MEDIA ADVISORY: 528th to unfurl new unit colors

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, July 14, 2009) — The 528th Sustainment Brigade (Airborne) will unfurl new unit colors, after which Col. Lenny J. Kness will assume command in a formal ceremony Friday, July 17, at 8 a.m.

The ceremony will take place on the Meadows Memorial Parade Field located next to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters.

The newly-renamed brigade will complete another phase of change with the uncasing of the new brigade colors. On Feb. 2, the Sustainment Brigade (Special Operations) (Airborne), was officially re-designated as the 528th Sustainment Brigade (Airborne). The brigade will continue to serve in its previous role as the only organic sustainment and support unit within USASOC.

Immediately following the uncasing of the colors, Kness will assume command from Col. Duane A. Gamble.

Kness is a native of Clinton, Iowa, where he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1982 as a tank turret mechanic. In 1987, he was commissioned in the Quartermaster Corps after earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Northeast Missouri State University, Merryville, Mo.  Later he earned a Master of Science degree in Continuing Education from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.

Kness is coming to the 528th Sustainmet Bde., from Senior Service College, Washington, D.C.

Gamble, the commander of 528th Sustainment Bde., since June 17, 2007, will become the logistics officer for XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.

The ceremony will be presided over by Lt. Gen. John F. Mulholland, USASOC commanding general.
